While doing live caricatures at an outdoor festival, I overheard this snippet of a conversation between a fellow caricature artist and a festival patron:
"Ma'am, I just can't do that."
"No, please? Can you draw her... but not Asian?"
"But... she IS Asian."
"I know, but can you please draw her NOT Asian?"

Redraw...!

| 05/31/14 I really enjoyed drawing this customer. I had an idea what I wanted to do, and I liked it - but afterward, I thought of other directions I might want to take the drawing. |

| 06/07/14 After a couple rough sketches, I redrew the caricature. |
Instead of exaggerating the glasses up, I pushed them down.
Instead of making the eyes tiny and close together, I moved them apart and made them conform to the overall head structure more.
Instead of making the hair squished up, I took it off the page in just about all directions.
Not only is it a better likeness, I think it's a better drawing all around.

The Season Opens for *LoL* Caricature Co.!!!

We had a GREAT time at the Cinco de Mayo festival in Denver's Civic Center Park. I worked with Michael and Brooke on Sunday, and we were ROCKIN'.

ALL-TIME BEST BAD REACTIONS TO A CARICATURE:
These are all real, true-life-story comments from real customers.
They are all recent, and I'll continue to add to the list as those 'stellar' reactions continue.
What do you mean?
"You drew my mom and she died. I’m very superstitious and I want my money back.”
Where's the drawing?
“Oh, I burned the drawing.”
No, he did not get a refund...
But when it comes to harsh critiques, ‘your drawing killed my mother’ tops the list.
They are all recent, and I'll continue to add to the list as those 'stellar' reactions continue.

“You would get better tips if you didn’t draw so terribly,
and if you weren’t such a horrible person.” (4BW: Friends loved it and paid)

“I don’t look like this! (To a random passerby): “Does THIS

Historians were awestruck to discover new drawings by Leonardo DaVinci, which were previously thought to have been destroyed in the "Bonfire of the Vanities..."
REDRAWS! These faces gave me such great ideas, I had to redraw them!

A NEW SEASON BEGINS!

Last weekend, we started a new season at LOL Caricature Company.
It was a blast to be working with Brooke (boss lady,) Ben (kid genius,) and our newest member, Nicko (surfer dude!)
The stand, and the guys:
(It was kinda chilly!)

First victim of the day: Nicko!!! My version(L), and Ben's awesome drawing(R):
Nick reacts to his caricatures...
Brooke and Levi have made numerous improvements to the stand, including some weather-related elements. It's like last summer, only better!!!
I can hardly wait to get into this summer's caricature season. It occurred to me when Ben and I were talking, that it's pretty much an unbelievable 'dream-come-true' job: "The more I draw, the more fun I have, and the more I get paid!"
That is exactly like someone saying: "Here ya go - the more fun you have, the more money I'm gonna give ya!"
Not bad, eh? Now that's what I call a 'win/win situation!'
I'm really excited, and I have plans and intentions for the season:
1. To continually improve my drawings, which includes:
2. Sharpening my skills in quickly coming up with a concept and holding that concept through the entire drawing process.
3. Simplifying my drawings, compositions and design.
4. Honing my decision-making skills; every drawing is a series of decisions.
5. Improve my handling of color. Sometimes, less is more; sometimes, MORE is more!

BEATLES!
Some sketches for the continuing series "Face the Music." This time, The Beatles:
My sister was asking me what I plan to draw/paint next, and said, "What about the Beatles?" Originally, I thought it might prove too trite, as a lot of artists have done the Beatles.
However, I decided to check it out. As I searched for images, I was pleasantly surprised by several things:
1. There are a ton of images of the Beatles out there.
2. The Beatles had several distinct phases in their short career, and there was a distinct 'look' to each of those eras; from the Fab Four, to Sergeant Peppers, to Let it Be, and several in between. There is a lot to choose from.
3. At first, they were packaged to look very uniform and similar. However, as they aged, their faces grew more and more distinct and the differences were more pronounced. This gives me the opportunity to contrast each face against the others.
4. They really have interesting faces, which is the most critical element; I mean, if I'm going to spend the time drawing and/or painting them, I might as well find the subject matter interesting.
I was pleasantly surprised as I sketched, that they are also fun to draw. I could spend a lifetime just exploring the possibilities!
